Reading Activity 2.

Of what social status is Ai and her family, are they wealthy? How do you know this? What is your reasoning for thinking this?

I think that because a Mah-Jong Man is a place where you gamble like a casino  and that was where Ai’s dad was. They are not wealthy because the father keeps on going to the Mah-Jong  Man place and always  loses his money.

Where had mother gone to? There mother had gone to find Ai’s father at the Mah-Jong Man  place  like every Mah-Jong Man place in town and they were all worried that they would not find him anywhere.

How had the situation taken a turn? Who was now taking care of the children? The situation  was that was  that their father was not a good father to his family the way  he is drunk all day  when he comes home and right now Ai’s mother is the boss of the  family which means that their father will never come back to their family.

For what reason do you think the children’s mother had been staying at their fathers office on her own? Ai’s mother had been staying at her husbands office because she really miss him and she was praying and searching for Ai’s father all over town and her 2 children want’s their father back home a back together with their mother

What bad habits does father have? Where do you think he is going in the evenings?Father has bad habits in his heart that means that he doesn't even care about his family suffering without him and that they are poor because their father had took all of the money and lose them all ,  and their father goes to the Mah-Jong man place  everyday in the  evenings.

List three examples of bad habits:

Losing all of their money.

And they are not wealthy.

Their father is not a good husband to their mother at all.

Reading Activity 2.

Summarise what has happened in the story so far.While Ellie was sleeping on her bed dreaming her bed and the house was shaking so hard that it would be stronger than a car crashing in to other people’s cars. Ellie thought she was dreaming and then when she opened her bright eyes and started getting scared and then she did not know what she could do so then she crawled down and across the room and just remembered that her teacher and the student’s where talking about earthquake and she just remembered the drill at school that the teacher said it would be a bad Idea if you would stand or hide underneath a door or even the hallway. Ellie was terrified and scared of the earthquake and Ellie’s father just came up stairs to check on her and her father said “The power is out” and Ellie still just stayed still on the doorway. Ellie’s father shone the torch on her so she can see light and her father said “Come on lets go downstairs and find that old radio” and she finally standed up and walked downstairs with her father.

The city where Ellie and her parents lived got advised to boil all drinking water for at least three minutes. Ellie’s mum said to save some water. Ellie and her mum went to the shop to get some supplies and they were just on time to at the dairy . Ellie and her mum saw a lot of people stuffing food in their trolley and even the shelves was almost empty . So then they got what they needed Elie was happy go home. Back at home Ellie’s dad began checking the house for damage. Several big windows were cracked. There were cracks in the ceiling and in the walls , and there was a huge crack down in the middle of the chimney. Ellie’s dad said “I’ll have to take it down,” . and he went to go and find the ladder. When Ellie and her mum was on there way home they saw the shops and they were even damage badly and broken in pieces.

Ellie is crouched down very low with her arms over her head. How might this help? What is she waiting for?It would protect her face and also her whole body and that is why she has covered herself.

• Why did Ellie think “at least”? What is she referring to? Have a look back in the text and see if you can find what this refers to. Ellie is waiting for the earthquake to stop.

Why were people buying water? Because they needed water to drink if they walk any further.

• What about the batteries and the bread? Why were they selling out? Share your ideas with a partner.They needed batteries for their torches and radio to know what was going on outside the whole world. They need bread because they needed food to help them survive.

Why do you think the author has mentioned this? What does she want us to know?She want’s us to know what to do when an earthquake happens where you live.

• What have you found out about what it is like for this family? Which parts of the text have helped you to do this?I have found that it is hard if you have an earthquake in your city or even where you even live or your country but most of all your country.

What you think the author’s purpose was for writing this story?I think that the author purpose was to let the reader know what to do when ever an earthquake happens wherever you live like your country so you can be safe whenever and wherever you live.

What parts of the text helped you to come to this understanding?Because I know how it feels when your house gets demolished down and you will need to live somewhere like the hotel. And to also become a person to help other people that their country can be safe but getting help from other people.
